Knowledge session on "Cloud Computing in Telecom"

On 4th December, 2024, the TRAI Centre of Studies and Research (TCSR) hosted a workshop on Cloud Computing in Telecom in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS). The workshop focused on the role of cloud technologies in transforming the telecom sector, enhancing operational efficiency, and driving innovation.

The event witnessed in-depth discussions on various aspects of cloud computing, including its adoption in telecom networks, security considerations, and the integration of cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Generative AI.


Key Discussions


1. AWS Presence in India The session highlighted AWS’s significant presence in India, including its extensive Data Center regions and infrastructure, which support the telecom ecosystem with scalable and reliable cloud solutions.


2. Cloud for Telecom: AWS Cloud Continuum and Key References This session provided insights into the AWS Cloud Continuum for Telecom, showcasing how telecom operators are leveraging cloud solutions to modernize networks. Case studies and reference architectures were shared, demonstrating successful implementation scenarios.


3. AWS Telecom Offerings: Cloudified Networks and Simplified Operations

AWS experts elaborated on three critical verticals:


Network Cloudification: Enabling flexible and resilient telecom networks through cloud adoption.

Operational Simplification: Tools and services for streamlining telecom operations, reducing costs, and improving agility.

Customer Experience (CX): Leveraging cloud technologies to enhance customer engagement and satisfaction.


4. Cloud Security Practices Emphasis was placed on the shared responsibility model between AWS and its customers. Best practices for ensuring robust cloud security were discussed, including security in the cloud (managed by AWS) and security of the cloud (customer-managed). The session also highlighted AWS's security tools and frameworks to safeguard telecom data and applications.


5. AI and Generative AI in Telecom The concluding session explored the transformative potential of AI and Generative AI for the telecom sector. Speakers shared insights into real-world use cases such as predictive maintenance, personalized customer experiences, and automated network management. The rapid adoption of these technologies by global telecom operators was also discussed, underscoring their growing relevance.
